Bulldogs finish third at Rhody Invitational

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The Bryant University golf team shot a day-two 303 and finished third overall at the 2014 Rhody Invitational with a two-round score of 608.

Graduate student Sam Russell (Southborough, Mass.) picked up where he left off Saturday shooting a 73 on Sunday, finishing +5 and tied for third place individually.  Russell had 5 birdies and 22 pars in the tournament, and capped off his best performance of the year with an overall score of 147.

Joe Walp (Portland, Maine) also had a strong Day 2, shooting a 74 and rising to T-10th place overall.  Ryan Tombs (Bedford, N.H.), and Zach Garbacik (South Hadley, Mass.) also finished in the top-20, shooting overall scores of 154 (T-17th) and 155 (T-19th) respectively.  Outside of Bryant's starting five, freshman McKinley Slade (Saunderstown, R.I.) had a top-10 finish with an overall score of 149, tying him for 6th place in the individual standings. 

The University of Rhode Island took first place in the tournament with a team score of 597, and Sacred Heart University followed closely behind with a 601 to finish second overall.  Rounding out the top-five in team standings was Bryant University (608) in third, Williams College (618) in fourth, and Fordham University (620) in fifth.

The Bulldogs return to the links this weekend at the New England Division I Championships, hosted at Mohegan Sun Country Club in Baltic, Conn., April 12 and 13.
