Four finish in top-5 at ECAC Division I Championship

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Four different Bulldogs finished in the top-5 at the ECAC Division I Championship Monday and Tuesday, as the Bryant University golf team finished second at the Club at River Oaks.

The Bulldogs slipped to second by just a single stroke, finishing with a two-round 581 behind Fairfield's two-lap 580.

Senior Joe Walp (Portland, Maine) and junior Ryan Tombs (Bedford, N.H.) tied for third in the 24-golfer field after posting 36-hole scores of 145. Tombs carded the best score of the opening round with a 68, while Walp finished the tournament with the top score of the second at an even-par 71.

Just one stroke behind and tied for fifth place were teammates Kyle Buschmann (East Haddam, Conn.) (70-76) and McKinley Slade (Saunderstown, R.I.) (73-73). All four players were named to the all-tournament team.

Sophomore Gabriel Van Ness (Clinton, Conn.) finished tied for 15th with a two-round score of 154 (78-76).

Stags claimed the top two individual slots, with Kevin Duncan winning the title with an even-par 142 (70-72) and Eric Austin coming in a stroke back with a 143 (70-73). Siena, UMass Lowell and St. Francis Brooklyn rounded out the team competition, respectively.

The Bulldogs return to the course Oct. 12-13 at the Connecticut Cup.
