Men's Lacrosse Defeats Merrimack to Advance to NE-10 Championship

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (May 4, 2005) – Senior defenseman Ryan Rodriguez (Fairfield, Conn.) picked up a ground ball in his own end of the field, broke all the way down the field and scored on a low shot with nine seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift the Bryant University men’s lacrosse team to a 10-9 double overtime over Merrimack College in the semifinal round of the Northeast-10 Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Warrior Field.

The Bulldogs, ranked 10th nationally, improved to 11-5 and will face top-seeded Le Moyne in the tournament championship on Saturday 1 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y. The ninth-ranked Warriors finish the season 11-5.

Bryant scored the first two goals of the second half to build a 7-4 lead, but the Warriors responded with a 5-0 run to take a 9-7 lead less than a minute into the fourth quarter.
Freshman Craig Buckhout (South Salem, N.Y.) scored man-up goal to trim the lead to one early in the fourth quarter, and freshman Zach Rosenow (Oyster Bay, N.Y) tied the game with just 2:03 left in regulation.

Buckhout led the Bulldogs with three goals, while sophomore Bryan Molk (Peabody, Mass.) added a pair of goals. Senior Andrew Serge (Albany,  N.Y.) scored a goal and added two assists for Bryant.

Senior Kurt Carlson (Lynn, Mass.) led Merrimack with four goals, while senior Mike Fidler (Billerica, Mass.) added two goals and an assist. Senior Nolan Godfrey (Haverhill, Mass.) won 21-of-23 faceoffs and picked up 12 ground balls for the Warriors.

Freshman Michael Kennedy (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) made eight saves to earn the win for Bryant, while freshman Eric Tompkins (Newington, Conn.) stopped 14 shots for the Warriors.

Merrimack played in six overtime games in 2005, winning four, including a 7-6 overtime win over Bryant during the regular season.
