Bryant opens America East play Saturday vs UMBC

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's lacrosse team opens America East play on Saturday when it welcomes UMBC to Beirne Stadium. Faceoff is set for 12:00 p.m.

Saturday marks the league opener for both teams. Bryant was picked to finish fourth, while UMBC was picked second.

THE SERIES
Bryant and UMBC are meeting for the first time in program history.  

SCOUTING UMBC
The Retrievers enter Saturday at 5-1 and are receiving votes in the national polls. UMBC picked up a marquee victory over Towson earlier this year and has held five of its first six opponents to single-digit goals. The Retrievers are tied with UNC for the No. 1 nationally in scoring defense.

Mateo Brown leads the team with 17 goals and 18 points, while Allen Hockenberry has 16 points (7g, 9a). Jayson Tingue owns a .580 save percentage and a 7.12 goals against average. 

BRYANT NOTES AND NOTABLES

  • The Bulldogs are 4-2 on the year following an 11-6 loss at Air Force last Saturday.
  • Bryant was held under 10 goals for the first time this year. The Bulldogs are 14th nationally, averaging 14.0 goals per game.
  • Jack Lonsinger ranks second among freshmen nationally with 3.25 goals per game this season. He was held scoreless at Air Force.
  • Kevin Groeninger posted two goals against the Falcons and leads the team with 23 points. 
  • Aidan Goltz notched his third hat trick of the year and has scored multiple goals in all six games this season.
