Boxscore

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Despite a game-tying goal from Taylor Sabo in the 62nd minute to force overtime, the Bryant University men's soccer team fell, 3-2, to Long Island University on the road Friday afternoon in its Northeast Conference debut.

Sabo's goal, a header from six yards out off an Erik Lekstrom free kick, knotted the game at 2-2 mid-second half and the score would stick through the end of regulation. But in overtime, Josh Maley scored his first goal of the season at a most opportune time for the Blackbirds (4-4, 1-0 NEC), who notched the game winner in the 99th minute when Maley volleyed the ball into the net after a deflection off Bryant goalie Matt Miscione.

The Bulldogs (2-7, 0-1 NEC) were outshot, 3-0, in the extra frame and 17-9 on the match.

The Blackbirds opened the scoring in the 31st minute off a Steve Jakubowski header from a Craig Stant free kick. The Bulldogs would even the score, 1-1, just seconds before the halftime break, when Sean Reilly launched a corner to the back post for the head of Patrick Bedard, who took the feed and sent it into the goal.

But it wouldn't take long for LIU to regain the lead after the intermission, as Jakubowski notched his second goal of the game and fourth of the season off a shot from 30 yards out into the right corner of the goal.

Sabo's header score would reknot the game at 2-2 to force overtime, but it wasn't to be as the Bulldogs dropped their second overtime game in three contests.

Miscione made seven saves between the posts for the Bulldogs, while LIU earned more corners than Bryant, 8-4. Tom Nelan led the Bulldogs with three shots, all on target.

The Bulldogs' next return home to host St. Francis (N.Y.) at Bulldog Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 4 (1 p.m.) as part of Bryant's Homecoming Weekend.
