MEN'S SOCCER SHUTOUT 2-0 IN CONFERENCE MATCHUP WITH ST. FRANCIS (N.Y.)

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant University men's soccer team drops to 0-2 in the Northeast Conference after losing a physical battle with NEC foe St. Francis (N.Y.), 2-0, Sunday at the Bryant Turf Complex.

The Bulldogs (2-8, 0-2) were shutout in a physical game where 35 fouls, including two yellow cards, were issued.

Bryant had plenty of chances accumulating 12 total shots, half of which were sent on net. The first chance for the Bulldogs came in the 25th minute when junior midfielder Erik Lekstrom (Worcester, Mass.) sent a corner to the far post to teammate Sean Kaukas (Glastonbury, Conn.). Kaukas was able to get a head on the ball but it bounced right into the awaiting arms of St. Francis keeper Chris Antonino.

The first goal of the game came just before halftime in the 44th minute when Terrier defender Javier Gonzalez sent a long pass up field to Tevin Jackson who was all alone with only Bulldog keeper Matt Miscione (Ashburn, Va.) to beat. Jackson was able to get a head on the high-bouncing ball and send it in past the freshman.

The Bulldogs looked sharp to start the second half as they were awarded three consecutive corner kicks within the first two minutes of the half. Unfortunately the Bulldogs were not able to develop a goal from any one of the chances.

Miscione made four saves in the contest including a fully laid-out diving stop in the 67th minute when Terrier forward John Sallhag sent a promising cross to midfielder Jeverto De Lorenzi who was denied by the keeper.

The final tally of the game came just four minutes later in the 71st minute when St. Francis' Robbie Weir sent a cross from the left side of the field to a wide open Lorenzi who was able to beat Miscione to his left and make the score 2-0 in favor of the Terriers.

The Terriers improved to 4-4 on the season and earned their first Northeast Conference win.

The Bulldogs travel to Hamden, Conn. to face off with NEC opponent Quinnipiac on Friday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. before returning home on Sunday, Oct. 11 when the Bulldogs host Central Connecticut at 3:30 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
