MEN'S SOCCER WINS FIRST GAME OF THE 2009 SEASON IN A THRILLING 1-0 VICTORY AT HOLY CROSS

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Bryant University men's soccer team shined under the lights of the Smith Soccer Stadium as they battled Holy Cross to a 1-0 victory tonight.

Senior Neil Black (Roslyn Heights, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute of tonight's game against Holy Cross (0-2). With the win the Bulldogs improve to 1-3 on the season. Black found himself in the right place at the right time on a Bulldog corner late in the game. The ball was sent into junior Tom Nelan (East Haddam, Conn.) who battled multiple Crusader defenders to win the header that was sent to the right foot of Black. The senior was able to one-time volley the ball into the right side-netting past Holy Cross keeper Thomas Booth.

Despite having a late goal scored on them, the Crusaders battled for the remainder of the game and tested freshman goalkeeper Matt Miscione (Ashburn, Va.) until the final whistle. Miscione came up big with a series of saves in the final four minutes of the contest to seal the first Bulldog victory of the 2009 season. The freshman had four total saves in the game. The hustle and play of forward Matt Brown (South Easton, Mass.) also played a crucial role in the Bulldogs victory.

The Bulldogs were outshot 13-7 but led in corners taken by a margin of 8-4.

Bryant hopes to carry the momentum into their next game Friday, Sept. 11 when they host Army at 3 p.m.
