MEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN OVERTIME, 4-3, AT MOUNT ST. MARY'S FRIDAY NIGHT

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite a pair of first half goals by senior Norbert Guery (Andover, Mass.), the Bryant University men's soccer team lost an overtime heartbreaker, 4-3, to Mount St. Mary's on the road Friday night.

With the loss, the Bulldogs dip to 4-7-2 on the season and 2-3-2 in the Northeast Conference while the Mount improves to 6-9-0 overall.

The Mountaineers got off to a fast start as Tom Wheeler scored in opening minute of the contest, chipping in a deflection from the left side of the field.

Bryant came back to even the score in the 11th minute thanks to Guery's first tally of the half, fielding a pass from senior Tom Nelan (East Haddam, Conn.) and beating Mount keeper Chris Davis. Guery scored again five minutes later when he knocked in long ball from Joseph DiMauro (Middletown, Conn.) for his fifth goal of the season.

The Bulldogs continued to shine offensively following the break when Nelan, setup on a pass from Guery, blasted a shot from 25-feet out for the 3-1 advantage.

With just over ten minutes left in regulation, the Mount chipped away at the two-goal deficit when Eric Detzel scored on a cross from Patrick Wheeler in the 79th minute. The comeback was completed in the 87th minute when Patrick Wheeler sent a cross to Chris Wheeler who delivered the equalizer for his 12th goal of the season.

In overtime, Detzel sent a free kick into the Bulldog box where Alex Ockford was waiting to field the deflection and capitalize on the rebound for the game-winner.

Senior Victor Tutino (Deer Park, N.Y.) recorded seven saves in between the pipes for the Bulldogs while Chris Davis stopped four for the Mount.

The Black and Gold return to conference play Sunday, Oct. 24 when they visit Monmouth at 1:00 p.m.
