Men's soccer drops NEC opener

A SECHOND HALF SAINT FRANCIS (PA) GOAL WAS THE DIFFERENCE IN THE 1-0 MATCH

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's soccer team fell to Saint Francis (PA), 1-0, on a rainy Friday afternoon in Smithfield.

The lone goal of the match came in the 55th minute off the foot of Pedro Machado on a pass from teammate Wayne Tiller. Machado beat Bryant keeper Chris Knaub (Yarmouth, Maine) just inside the box, launching a shot into the back of the net, granting the Red Flash the 1-0 lead.

The weather was the biggest factor on Friday as slick conditions created difficult situations for both teams. The Bulldogs had multiple scoring opportunities in each half but were unable to register the equalizer.

The Bulldogs were outshot by the visitors, 11-10, in the contest, however Bryant had five shots on goal that were all turned back by Saint Francis (PA) keeper Daniel Valcicak. Knaub finished the contest with three saves of his own, allowing the single goal.

The Black and Gold now fall to 2-3-1 (0-1 in NEC), however, they welcome Robert Morris to Smithfield on Sunday as they attempt to earn their first conference victory of 2012. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
