Larocque's last-second heroics lifts Bryant to W

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – With less than 10 seconds to play, sophomore forward Brett Larocque (Ottawa, Ont.) converted for his second goal of the match to lift the Bryant University men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over UMass Lowell Thursday night.

With overtime seemingly imminent, junior defender Shane Murphy (Kennet Square, Pa.) fired a blast toward the Riverhawk goal just in time for Larcoque to tip in his second tally of the match with eight seconds remaining in regulation. With the victory, Bryant snaps a three-game skid to improve to 2-3 overall, while first-year Division I program UMass Lowell falls to 1-4.

Larocque got things started for the Black and Gold in the 25th minute on a helper from freshman defender Chris McCormick (Boucherville, Quebec) to put the visitors up 1-0 early on. Minute later, junior midfielder Lucas Guerriero (Pickering, Ont.) doubled the Bryant advantage with his first score of the 2013 season at the 32 minute mark.

Just before the half, the Riverhawks cut the deficit in half with a Wuilitio Fernandes score on an assist from Kevin Zapata.

The two teams remained scoreless for the first 32 minutes of the second half until Homero Morais beat Chris Knaub (Yarmouth, Maine) to tie the score 2-2 in the 78th minute until the Murphy-Larocque connection granted Bryant the victory.

Knaub made five saves in his second victory of the year while UMass's Chris Maierle stopped one Bryant chance in the loss.

Despite being outshot, 16-10, the Bulldogs pick up the much-needed victory as they look to continue their strong play when they host Rider on Sunday at 1 p.m.
