Dive into men's soccer's historic 2023 campaign

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant University men's soccer team had a historic and record-breaking 2023 season which saw the program accomplish many firsts under head coach Ruben Resendes, including winning the program's first conference title.

Following a spring of change and summer of new additions, the Bulldogs entered the 2023 season prepared to take the America East by storm. Opening the campaign in Smithfield against Central Connecticut, defender Abdel Talabi scored a header off an Inigo Villaldea corner in the 55th minute to win a season opener for the first time in a decade. That victory was the first in a seven game win streak. During that span, Bryant did not allow a goal and outscored their opponents 17-0.

After falling to Vermont, the Black and Gold rebounded by going undefeated for the next 11 games which became the squad's longest unbeaten streak in program history. The previous record was 10 games unbeaten which was set in 2014.

The Championship Run

The Black and Gold picked up a 4-1-2 record in conference play to earn them the No. 2 seed in the America East Conference Championship tournament. Seeded second,  the squad earned home field advantage and a first round bye going into the semifinal round.

In the semifinals, Bryant took on sixth-seeded Binghamton at Beirne Stadium in front of over 1100 fans. The Black and Gold scored two first half goals to secure the lead before scoring a third in the second half. With a final score of 3-1, the team advanced to their first ever America East Conference Championship.

The Bulldogs made the trip to Durham, NH to take on top-seeded UNH in the final. The game was scoreless through regulation and the first overtime period thanks to a stout Bryant defense and career game from goalie Antreas Hadjigavriel. Two minutes into the second overtime period, Jonas Lyshoj scored a breakaway goal to put the Black and Gold ahead. After eight minutes of all-out defending by the squad to finish out the second overtime period, Bryant won their first conference title.
