SWIM TEAMS TURN IN FINE PERFORMANCES AT URI INVITATIONAL

BRYANT SWIM TEAMS COMPETE AT URI INVITE

KINGSTON, R.I. - Two weeks since last competing, the Bryant University men's and women's swim team took part in the University of Rhode Island Harold Anderson Invitational over the weekend with several outstanding performances by several Bulldogs.  The women placed third with a combined team total points of 561.  The men finished fourth with 511.

The women's team finished behind host URI and Holy Cross while earning wins over Springfield College and Providence College. 

The men defeated Holy Cross as the Crusaders finished fifth with 459 points.  Springfield won the men's invitational, edging Providence and Rhode Island, which finished second and third respectively.

Freshman Molly Smith took top honors in the 200 yard breastroke, finishing first in a season-best time of 2:27.08.  Smith would finish second in the 400 individual medley in 4:40.82, just ahead of teammate Jess Looney who was third in 4:47.05.  Smith improved her season-best time by two seconds in the event.  Smith was also second in the 500 free in 5:11.81.

Fellow freshmen Casey Ostrander captured two first-place finishes of her own by winning the 100 backstroke in 59 minutes flat and adding a first in the 50 free in 24.87 seconds.  She was also third in the 100 free in 54.48 and teammate Kim Carballeira was third in the 1650 freestyle in 11:07.02.

The men were led by Alex Kosenski who looked very sharp in the men's 200 freestyle, finishing first and bettering his season-time by more than two seconds after touching the wall in 1:45.15. Earlier in the meet, Kosenski finished tird in the 50 free in 22.23 after URI's Matthew Burak and Providence's Matt Card tied for first in a time of 21.90 seconds.

Matt Derwin took third place in the men's 200 butterfly in 2:00.12 while teammate Steve Nguyen was third in the 200 breastroke (2:20.99).  Nguyen would place second in the 500 free in 4:57.58, a season-best for the Bulldog junior.

Thomas Huynh was second in the 100 butterfly in 52.60.

The men's and women's teams will be idle for the holidays and will return to action in mid January when they take on Siena and Canisius in New York.
