SWIMMING DROPS DUAL MEET TO FAIRFIELD

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -  The Bryant University men's and women's swimming teams dropped a dual meet to Fairfield University Saturday afternoon with the men coming up just short to the Stags, falling 147.5-141.5 while the women came up short, 155-117 .

Steven Nguyen (San Jose, Calif.) had a fantastic afternoon for the men.  The junior recorded three victories to pace the Bulldogs. The first coming in the 800 meter freestyle, winning in a time of 9 minutes, 9.34 seconds, seven seconds ahead of second-place finisher Jonathan O'Connor of Fairfield.

Later, Nguyen would later take top honors in the 400 meter freestyle in a time of 4:24.24.  Teammate Brendan Heller (Naugatuck, Conn.) was fourth in 4:54.74.  Nguyen capped off the individual performance with a first in the 200 meter IM winning in a time of 2:19.30, just ahead of teammate Steve Sinclair (Middleton, Mass.) who was second in 2:24.57. Konrad Lech (Portland, Maine) was third in 2:46.95. 

Other winners for the men include sophomore Alex Kosenski (Lavalette, NJ) in the 200 meter freestyle (2:00.54), Kevin McDonald (North Haven, Conn.) in the 100 meter backstroke (1:01.79) and 200 backstroke (2:19.55), and Matt Derwin (Cheshire, Conn.) in the 200 meter butterfly (2:18.52).  In addition, the men capped off the meet with a win in the 400 meter freestyle relay in 3:44.51. 

The Bryant women were also victorious in the 400 freestyle relay, winning in a time of 4:14.74 keyed by the anchor leg of freshman Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.).  Ostrander took home a first-place finish in the 100 meter freestyle in 1:01.45.  Freshman Brianne Dwyer (Hicksville, N.Y.) was third in the event in 1:03.29. 

Senior standout Jessica Looney (Goffstown, NH) was first in the 200 meter backstroke in a time of 2:32.01 while freshman Molly Smith (Belmont, Mass.) captured a first-place of her own in the 200 IM in 2:29.02.
