December 10, 2010

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant University men's and women's swim teams return to action on Saturday against the University of Rhode Island. The Bulldogs will take on Rams at 11 a.m. at the Chace Athletic Center Pool.

The men (2-5) are looking for their third win of the season this weekend, while the women (3-7) will be aiming for their fourth.

Both the men's and women's teams last competed on Saturday at the Harold Anderson Invitational at URI. The men finished second in the six-team field with 697.5 points, just 2.5 points behind first-place Providence, who gained 66 points from the diving events Bryant did

not compete in. The women's team took fourth in a six-team field as the hosts dominated the women's side.

The men will be looking to continue their dominance over the Rams after finishing three places and 386.5 points above them in last weekend's meet. Bryant was led by several strong individual performances, including a record breaking win for junior Alex Kosenski (Lavallette, N.J.). Kosenski shattered the Harold Anderson Invitational record for the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.89. He also took first in the 50- and 200-yard freestyle events and was part of the first place 400-yard freestyle relay. Konsenski has now taken first in 15 events this year.

Freshman Cameron Hessler (Southbury, Conn.) picked up a first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, while Bryant teams also finished on top in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay.

The women will be hoping to overcome a tough URI (3-1) squad that won the Harold Anderson Invitational for the fourth straight year on Saturday. Despite taking fourth, the Bulldogs saw numerous individual successes. Among them was a recording setting performance by Katelyn Kidney (Lynn, Mass.) who set a new school mark with a time of 2:11 in the 200-yard butterfly competition. Sophomore Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.) earned Northeast Conference Co-Swimmer of the Week after capturing first in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke setting meet records of 57.11 and 2:05, respectively.
