Bulldogs lead start to finish in win over Bucknell

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's swimming and diving team made it two wins in two meets when they were able to defeat Bucknell 199-89 at the Chace Athletic Center Pool on Friday night.

Coach Cameron's Comments

"I think we swam great. We set a couple more pool records and then to finish with a 3:10 in the 400 freestyle relay was very exciting. I'm very pleased with where the men are. They're very deep. They're very driven and a lot of good things are going to happen."

  • The Bulldogs were off and running early when they finished 1-2 in three of the first five races on the night and were able to keep that pace throughout the night.

How the Swimmers Did

  • Bryant set three more pool records tonight, with Matthew Mays (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) setting the mark in the 200 back and Ben Schulte (Tumon, Guam) finishing with record time in the 200 breast.
  • The Bulldogs set another one in the 400 freestyle relay, when the team of Schulte, Mays, Colin Curtin (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Andrew Allen (Bedford, N.H.) finished in 3:10.63, 0.76 seconds ahead of the previous mark.
  • Mays continued his perfect start as a Bulldog, adding another 4-for-4 night with his debut against Boston College. Along with his 200 back and 400 freestyle relay wins, he led the pack in the 200 free and the 200 fly.
  • Allen, Curtin and Schulte all added three wins in a team effort for the Bulldogs.

How the Divers Did

  • Trevor Hazlewood (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Kevin Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn.) finished 1-2 in both diving events on the night, with the two trading victories.
  • Hazlewood won the 3-meter diving event with a final score of 285.38.
  • Sullivan's turn to win came in the 1-meter event, when he finished with a final of 262.41.

Stats and Notables

  • For Schulte and Mays, it is the second straight meet they have set a pool record. Mays set it in the 200 fly against Boston College, whereas Schulte set the new mark in the 100 breast.
  • In all, the Bulldogs won 10 of the races on the night.
  • Sullivan's diving score is a personal best in the 1-meter event.
  • Hazlewood and Sullivan finished 1-2 in the 1-meter diving event for the second straight week.
