SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men’s tennis team dropped a hard-fought 5-2 decision to Northeast Conference powerhouse Quinnipiac on a cold and windy day at the Bryant Tennis Courts.
The Bobcats (6-1) took two of the three doubles matches to open Sunday’s bout with a 1-0 lead as Bryant’s Cristian Balestrieri and Andres Orobitg improved to 8-0 on the year at No. 3 doubles with a 9-7 victory.
In singles play, Balestrieri staged a big comeback at No. 1 singles against Brian Mikkelson. The Bulldog junior was blanked 6-0 in the first set, but came back strong, winning the second 6-2 and closing out Mikkelson 6-1 in the third.
Juan Paredes dropped a tough decision to John Hughes at No. 2 singles as Paredes fell 7-5 in the opener before Hughes would pull out a 6-4 win in the second.
Tom Nowak earned Bryant’s (6-8) other point at No. 5 singles as the Bulldog junior needed a third-set match-breaker to pull out the win over Charles Feldman. Nowak dropped the first set to Feldman 6-4, but came back to win 6-4 in the second. In the match-breaker, Nowak muscled out a hard-fought 11-9 win.
