Men's tennis goes winless on weekend

PROVIDENCE – The Bryant University men's tennis team traveled to Brown University and dropped a pair of dual matches and a doubles-only match over the weekend, falling to 2-4 overall in the 2011-12 season.

The Bulldogs took on a strong Brown (6-0) squad in its first contest of the weekend on Saturday (Feb. 4) morning. The Bears swept all three doubles bouts for the first point of the dual match before going 5-1 in singles to wrap up the victory. Bulldog freshman Ernesto Arguello (Managua, Nicaragua) picked up the lone singles win for the Black and Gold by downing Andrew Yazmer by a 6-2; 6-3 margin.

On Saturday evening, the Black and Gold took on Northeast Conference rival Quinnipiac in a doubles-only match that included four bouts. The Bobcats took an early lead after winning the first match, 8-3, before the next two matches were split between both schools.

For Bryant, sophomore Connor Crowley (London, Onatario) – seeing action for the first time this season – teamed up with freshman Richard Sipala (Quogue, N.Y.) to earn Bryant's lone win (8-5) of the match. Down, 2-1, the Bulldogs needed to win the final match to at least draw even, but Quinnipiac's duo of Andrew Weeden and Micah Bailey edged Bryant's pair of sophomores Vidith Huot (Providence, R.I.) and Dana Parziale (Pinehurst, N.C.) in an intense 9-8 (3) victory that clinched the win for the Bobcats.

Bryant returned to dual match play the following morning against America East foe Binghamton, but the rough weekend continued for the Bulldogs. The Bearcats swept all three doubles matches to take the first point of the match before capping the morning with a sweep of all six singles bouts, as Bryant was shut out, 7-0, by an opponent for the first time in 2011-12.

The Bulldogs will hope to return to their winning ways with one match next weekend. Bryant travels to East Hartford, Conn., to take on BIG EAST opponent Villanova for a neutral-site showdown at the East Hartford Tennis Club on Friday (Feb. 10) afternoon. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
