Men's tennis honors seniors in 6-1 victory

Bulldogs smoke Sacred Heart, 6-1, on Senior Day

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's tennis team pushed its season-high winning streak to six straight victories, as the Bulldogs cruised to a 6-1 victory against Northeast Conference foe Sacred Heart on Wednesday afternoon at the Bryant Tennis Complex.

After the team honored its three seniors before the match, the Bulldogs (8-4, 1-0 NEC) made quick work of the visiting Pioneers (3-5, 1-1 NEC) by means of sweeping all six singles bouts. Sacred Heart picked up just one point in doubles by winning 2-of-3 contested matches.

Bryant seniors Andres Orobitg (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), Daniel Cournoyer (Jefferson, Mass.) and Buddy McQuade (Manchester, N.H.) all were recognized by head coach Ron Gendron before the action began. Orobitg and Cournoyer paired up to battle Sacred Heart at the #3 doubles spot and nearly took home a victory for the Bulldogs before falling, 9-7.

"It's always bittersweet to honor our seniors because we know this means that their playing days are nearly over, but it was great to send these guys off with a win today," Gendron said. "Andres, Danny and Buddy all were great teammates during their years with the program and played key roles during our transition to Division I."

Despite dropping the doubles point, the Bulldogs did not miss a beat as the match turned to singles. Sophomore Dana Parziale (Pinehurst, N.C.) cruised to a 6-1; 6-1 win at #2 singles over Logan Horing, while Peter Hart Callahan (Malvern, Pa.) dropped Jake Miller in a 6-4; 6-2 win at the #3 spot to push Bryant ahead, 2-1.

Rookies Ernesto Arguello (Managua, Nicaragua) and Juan Gonzalez-Paz (San Juan, Puerto Rico) gutted out wins at the #4 and #5 spots, respectively, to clinch the match in back-to-back victories while pushing the home side ahead, 4-1. Freshman Zachary Morris (Garden City, N.Y.) rallied from a first-set loss to down SHU's Chadd Sullo, one of the top players in the league, 4-6; 6-0; 7-5, before classmate Richard Sipala (Quogue, N.Y.) finished the day with a 6-1; 5-7 (11-9) win at #6 singles.

Bryant will stay busy this weekend with two more matches. First, the Bulldogs travel to Quinnipiac on Saturday for a 12 p.m. tilt before heading to Storrs, Conn., on Sunday to face the University of Connecticut at noon.
