Men's tennis knocks off QU, 5-2

Bulldogs knock off preseason favorite Quinnipiac, 5-2

HAMDEN, Conn. – Led by key wins from freshmen duo Juan Gonzalez-Paz (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Ernesto Arguello (Managua, Nicaragua) to secure the doubles points before taking 4-of-6 in singles, the Bryant University men's team took down preseason favorite Quinnipiac University, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts.

The freshmen doubles duo gutted out a key 9-7 victory in the #1 doubles flights to propel the Bulldogs (9-4) to their seventh straight victory, while the Bobcats (3-7) only picked up singles wins in two flights to account for their only scoring on the afternoon.

After taking the doubles point, Quinnipiac tied the match at 1-1 with a win at the #3 flight from Corey Morgenstern. But the Bulldogs would bounce right back with wins by sophomore Dana Parziale (Pinehurst, N.C.) at #2 singles – a 6-4; 6-4 victory over Garrett Lane. Freshman sensation Zachary Morris (Garden City, N.Y.) put the Bobcats on the brink of defeat with a huge 6-3; 6-3 win at the #1 flight, making it 3-1 in favor of the Bulldogs. The win marked Morris' team-leading seventh straight victory, as the rookie improved to 7-2 in singles at the #1 flight this season.

Moments later, Gonzalez-Paz clinched the match with a 6-4; 6-3 victory at #5 singles before freshman Richard Sipala (Quogue, N.Y.) rounded out the Bryant scorers with a 6-4; 6-1 victory at the #6 spot. QU's lone other point came at #4 singles from Eric Ambrosio.

"That's a good team we managed to take down today, and I'm proud of the way we competed all across the board," head coach Ron Gendron said afterward. "Now we'll head back, work hard again this week and prepare for a big match against Monmouth at home next Saturday."

The Bulldogs look to stay perfect in conference play next Saturday (March 31), as Bryant hosts Monmouth at 3 p.m. at the Bryant Tennis Complex.
