Men's tennis rolls past Monmouth, 6-1

Bulldogs drub Monmouth, 6-1, to win eighth-straight match

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bryant University men's tennis team kept its winning streak alive in commanding fashion on Saturday afternoon, as the Bulldogs played to a 6-1 victory against Northeast Conference foe Monmouth University at the indoor courts at Brown University to stretch their impressive undefeated streak to eight matches.

The Bulldogs improve to 10-4 on the season with an unblemished 3-0 mark in the NEC to keep pace with Mount St. Mary's – the only other undefeated conference squad – in the league standings. The Hawks fall to 3-7 on the season with an 0-1 mark in league play.

With the win, Bryant continues to keep its program-high eight-match winning streak intact while reaching double-digit victories for the second consecutive season. In 2010-11, the Bulldogs set a new Division I single-season high in wins with a 15-6 overall record. Bryant will have a chance to tie that mark with five more matches scheduled through the rest of the season.

Bryant raced off to a 3-0 lead in the match by virtue of sweeping all three doubles matches and taking wins at #3 and #4 singles. Senior Peter Hart Callahan (Malvern, Pa.) took a 6-4; 6-0 decision at the #3 flight before freshman Ernesto Arguello (Managua, Nicaragua) edged Carl Jedlinski, 7-6 (5); 7-5 at the #4 position to put the Hawks on the brink of defeat.

Freddy Marcinkowski secured Monmouth's lone point of the day with a hard-fought 3-6; 6-4; 6-1 win over Zachary Morris (Garden City, N.Y.) at #1 singles before the Bulldogs rounded it out with victories at the #2, #5 and #6 flights, respectively.

Sophomore Dana Parziale (Pinehurst, N.C.) enjoyed success in an exciting 7-5; 7-6 win at #2 singles before freshmen Juan Gonzalez-Paz (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Richard Sipala (Quogue, N.Y.) shut the door with wins at #5 and #6 singles.

"Doubles got the job done for us and we were fortunate to get off to a great start," head coach Ron Gendron said afterward. "Dana was solid, Ernesto continues to improve, and overall I'm very happy with the effort we had today. Monmouth is much, much better than the score indicates."

The Bulldogs go right back to work on Tuesday (April 3), when they travel to Storrs, Conn., to face the University of Connecticut at 3 p.m. Bryant will be looking for its first-ever victory against the Huskies.
