FDU tops Bryant 5-2 to snap streak

Nine-match winning streak snapped against Knights, Bulldogs fall 5-2

TEANECK, N.J. – The Bryant University men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision on Saturday afternoon against Fairleigh Dickinson, as the Bulldogs were limited to just two wins in singles and just one in doubles to spell the end of their program-high nine-match winning streak.

Winners of seven straight, the Knights improve to 11-7 overall and remain unbeaten in league play with a 3-0 Northeast Conference record. The Bulldogs fall to 11-5 on the season and suffer their first conference loss of the year to move to 3-1 in NEC action.

Freshmen Ernesto Arguello (Managua, Nicaragua) and Juan Gonzalez-Paz (San Juan, Puerto Rico) were the only doubles pair to emerge victorious, as the duo notched their 14th doubles win of the season together with an 8-7 (5) advantage in the No. 1 flight against Arvis Berzins and Ibrahim Shams. But the Knights secured the doubles point by posting wins in the second and third flights to take the early lead.

In singles, only Arguello and classmate Richard Sipala (Quogue, N.Y.) would come away victorious for the Black and Gold. Arguello secured his 13th singles win of the year with a 6-3; 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles over Mark Hemy. Sipala, meanwhile, won his team-high 10th straight singles match with a thrilling 1-6; 6-4; 10-8 victory at the No. 6 flight to improve to 18-5 on the season.

But those two wins would account for the only Bryant points, as FDU earned straight-set wins at the #1 and #2 singles bouts and clinched the match with two more wins at the #3 and #5 flights to upend the Bulldogs.

Up next, Bryant looks to return to its winning ways with a pair of road tilts in the Long Island area next weekend. First, the Bulldogs face Hofstra on Saturday (April 14) at 1 p.m. before doing battle against Stony Brook the following afternoon (April 15) at noon.
