Men's tennis opens at Brown

VIDITH HUOT FINISHES FIRST IN FLIGHT, LEADING BULLDOGS TO STRONG OPEN

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Led by a stellar performance from junior Vidith Huot (Providence, R.I.), the Bryant University men's tennis team had a strong showing in their season opener at the Brown Invitational over the weekend.

The Rhode Island native successfully outplayed three consecutive opponents without losing a set to win his individual flight. In the quarterfinals, Huot took down Boston University's Alex Hallenbeck, 7-6, 6-2, before defeating James Cohen of UConn, 6-3-, 6-2, in the semifinals. In the finals, Huot won in impressive fashion over his second BU foe, Brandan Phan, 6-3, 6-0.

Bryant's strong showing continued as freshman Guillaume Sabourin (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) finished second in his flight. Sabourin defeated Zac Mcentee from UConn, 6-4, 6-4, and David Neff from Brown, 2-6, 7-6 (10-3), to earn a spot in the championship. In the finals, the freshman won the first set against Marist's Billy Bishop, 4-6, however Bishop prevailed winning the final two sets, 6-1, 6-4.

Sophomore Juan Gonzalez-Paz (San Juan, Puerto Rico) also played well in the season opener, finishing third in his flight. Gonzalez-Paz won two of his three matches to earn a third place finish in his individual bracket.

In the doubles competition, the duos of Ernesto Arguello (Managua, Nicaragua)/Gonzalez-Paz and Joshua Rubinstein (Trumbull, Conn.)/Sabourin both earned fifth place finishes in their respective flights.

The Bulldogs next action will come at the UConn invitational on Sept. 28-30 where the Black and Gold will head to Storrs, Conn. in hopes of building on their early success.
