Men's tennis opens 2013 at Binghamton Invite

BULLDOG FRESHMAN GET FIRST TASTE OF COLLEGIATE COMPETITION AT BINGHAMTON INVITE OVER WEEKEND

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Coming off an unbelievable 2012-13 season, the Bryant University men's tennis team opened up its 2013 fall season with a strong showing at the Binghamton Invitational over the weekend.

Intent on giving their newcomers as much experience as possible, the Bulldogs featured a lineup comprised of primarily freshman. Led by the fantastic leadership of junior captain Ernesto Arguello (Managua, Nicaragua), the young crop of Bryant rookies faced off against tough competition in Binghamton and Niagara.

At no. 1 singles, Arguello earned a huge three-set victory over Niagara's David Raymond, 6-3, 6-0, 7-5. In addition to Arguello's solid play, freshman Alexander Ellwanger (Shrewsbury, Mass.) earned his first-career collegiate singles win, topping Binghamton's Harry Lee, 6-2, 7-5, while earning a pair of double's wins with partner Guillaume Sabourin (Dubai, United Arab Emirates). Sabourin was also terrific in singles play, defeating Niagara's Joe Gentile, 6-2, 6-0.

Freshman Joe Sterrey (Newnan, Ga.) topped Mark Mackowski from Niagara, 6-0, 6-2 and classmate Corey DiPaola (Lincoln, R.I.) squeaked out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Janik Burri of Binghamton, each earning their first singles victories at Bryant as well.

Fellow freshmen Christian Duarte (Dallas, Texas) and Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.) teamed up for a win over Binhamton's Justin Fields and Harry Lee, 6-4, 7-5, at no. 2 doubles, earning the duo their first win as a tandem.

Bryant continues it rigorous fall tournament schedule over the weekend (Sept. 13-15) when it heads down the road to Providence, R.I., for the Brown Invitational.
