Bulldogs continue to roll with another strong weekend

SMITHFIELD, R.I. –Another busy weekend and another impressive showing for the Bryant University men's tennis team, earning a flawless 7-0 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday at home, while simultaneously  putting together a solid effort at the Quinnipiac Invitational in Hamden, Conn.

On Friday, the Bulldogs opened action at the annual Quinnipiac Invite led by another strong outing from senior captain Dana Parziale (Pinehurst, N.C.). Parziale won a pair of matches in the A singles flight over Mark Hosang of UConn and Andrew Waddington of Bentley before play was suspended on Sunday due to rain. Sophomore Munir Serin (Mersin, Turkey) was equally impressive, scoring a pair of wins of his own over RJ Mirabile (Fairfield), 6-0, 6-0, and Ryoma Haraguchi (QU), 6-3, 6-3, advancing to the flight C semifinals before the weather stunted play.

Senior captain Chris Corrigan (Lincoln, R.I.) put together a nice weekend as well, scoring a come-from-behind opening round win over Andrew Weeden (QU), 2-6, 6-4, 10-5, in the D singles flight. Corrigan and partner Abdullah Abdulmohsen (Jabriya, Kuwait) also picked up a victory in the B doubles flight, defeating Alex Holdstein and Harrison Max of Hartford, 8-2.

On Saturday, the Black and Gold played host to Holy Cross for Bryant's first dual match of the 2013-14 season. From top to bottom the Bulldogs were sharp, sweeping the crusaders en route to a 7-0 victory. Freshman Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.) took care of Ryan Sullivan, 6-1, 6-1, at no. 1 singles, while junior captain Ernesto Arguello (Managua, Nicaragua) blanked Chris Brosnan, 6-0, 6-0, at the no. 2 spot. Freshmen Christian Duarte (Dallas, Texas), Joe Sterrey (Newnan, Ga.), John Templeman (Midland, Mich.), Alexander Ellwanger (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Corey DiPaola (Lincoln, R.I.) each earned their first dual match singles wins, as well.

Looking forward, Bryant will take a brief break from tourney action for a quartet of big-time home matches over Homecoming Weekend. On Saturday, the Bulldogs will welcome northeast rival Boston University to Smithfield for a pair of contests (10 a.m., 2 p.m.), before welcoming Northeast Conference foe St. Francis Brooklyn (9 a.m.) and Hartford (2 p.m.) to town on Sunday.
