Lorenz adds flight title, Bulldogs keep rolling at UConn
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Coming off a win in the No. 1 doubles flight on Friday, the Bulldogs wrapped up play at the UConn Invitational on Sunday with yet another strong showing.
Freshman Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) captured his first-career flight victory, running the table in the B singles flight over the weekend. Lorenz took down Siena's Eric Sumanaru, UConn's Parker Goldstein, and Quinnipiac's Julian Rozenstein before downing Jonathan Edwards of UConn, 6-4, 6-2, in the flight championship.
Senior Joshua Rubinstein (Trumbull, Conn.) also picked up a quality win in the first round of the A Flight knocking off Sacred Heart's Justin Pagan, 6-0, 6-4. Rubinstein and partner Nick Lamart (Raleigh, N.C.) also advanced to the quarterfinals of the A doubles flight with a win over Bentley's Chase Rosa and Brendan McCarthy, 8-6.
Also in the A Singles Flight, junior Richard Sipala (Quogue, N.Y.) fought back to win the consolation bracket with quality wins over Hartford's Willdrumwright and Bentley's McCarthy.
In the D Singles Flight, junior Guillaume Sabourin (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) picked up a pair of victories, knocking off Peter Koopman (Bentley), 6-4, 6-0, and Luis Montes (Hartford), 6-2, 6-4, before falling to Quinnipiac's Carlos Fernandez in the semifinals.
Looking ahead, the Bulldogs have perhaps their busiest weekend of the fall with tournaments at Yale and Brown and a dual match vs. Rochester in Smithfield on Saturday.
