Bulldogs split final NEC tuneups over weekend

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's tennis team closed out regular season Northeast Conference play with a tough loss to Wagner on Friday before cruising past Sacred Heart, 6-1, on Sunday.

On Friday, the Bulldogs (6-10, 2-1 Northeast Conference) looked to be on their way to their second league win of the year, taking an early 3-0 lead behind wins from Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, R.I.) at No. 1 singles, Zachary Morris (Garden City, N.Y.) at the No. 2 spot and Joshua Rubinstein (Trumbull, Conn.) at 5 singles. However, the Seahawks (12-9, 3-2 NEC) refused to go down quietly, rattling off three-straight singles wins to even the score, 3-3, heading into doubles.

In doubles competition, Kuhar and classmate Joshua Kliger (Newport Beach, Calif.) took down Michal Rolski and Juan Alanis at the No. 1 spot before Charlton Boyd and Ryan Khan evened the score once again with a win at No. 2 doubles. Wagner's Allen Wang and Jakob Mostyn-Kolb clinched the doubles point and the match with their narrow 8-7 victory at No. 3 doubles to give the visitors their third league win of the season.

Sunday sang a different tune for the Black and Gold, sporting a more familiar lineup en route to the 6-1 victory over Sacred Heart. Kuhar and Morris each improved to 2-0 on the weekend at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, with wins over Justin Pagan and Mathieu Pilote. Freshman Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.), sophomore Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Max Vogt (Fair Oaks, Calif.) each followed suit to help Bryant nearly sweep singles play.

In doubles action, Morris and classmate Ernesto Arguello (Managua, Nicaragua) took down Karan Narula and Anthony Savio, 8-4, at the No 2 spot while Lorenz and Welsh took care of Pilote and Cory Seltman, 8-6, to secure the point for Bryant.

Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will wrap up regular season play with a showdown in Smithfield vs. NC State (Thursday – 9 a.m.) before preparing to defend the NEC Title at the Conference Championships beginning on Friday in West Windsor, N.J.
