Bulldogs beat Navy, George Washington Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md.  – The Bryant University men's tennis team defeated Navy, 4-1, and George Washington, 5-2, on Saturday to complete a perfect weekend of tennis in Annapolis.  

Bryant defeated Mount St. Mary's, 7-0, on Friday night before sweeping Saturday's matches with Navy and George Washington.

How it Happened (Navy)

  • The Bulldogs grabbed an early lead in doubles with a win at No. 3, but Navy tied things with a win at No. 1.
  • Junior Guido Argentini (Boca Raton, Fla.) and sophomore Trent Massam (Wellington, New Zealand) then stepped up and earned a big 6-4 win at No.2 to clinch the point.
  • In singles, senior Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, R.I.) quickly made it 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1.
  • The Midshipmen won at No. 5 to close the gap but senior Artur Jakubowski (Dallas, Texas) and freshman Alexander Schou (Holte, Denmark) won to clinch the match.
  • At No. 6, Schou won the first set, 7-6 (8-6), before closing the match with a 6-2 win.

How it Happened (George Washington)

  • GW jumped out to an early lead by winning all three doubles matches. All three were tight, however, with the Colonials winning 7-6, 6-4 and 7-6.
  • Bryant picked it up in singles play, winning at 3, 1 and 4 to quickly take the lead.
  • Jakubowski won 6-1, 6-1, Kuhar won 6-4, 6-1 and Argentini made it 3-1 with a 7-5, 6-0 win.
  • After the Colonials pulled within 3-2, the inspired play of Andrew Pregel (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Massam led the Bulldogs to victory.
  • Pregel clinched the match at 6, winning 7-6, 6-3, as Massam was battling back from a first-set loss at 5. Massam evened with a 7-6 win and then won a tiebreak, 10-8, to close out the successful weekend.
