SMITHFIELD, R.I. – For the third time in as many matchups, the Eagles from Boston College shutout the Bryant University softball team as they defeated the Bulldogs, 8-0, in five innings on Saturday afternoon at the Bryant Softball Complex.

The Eagles (9-10) outhit the Bulldogs (2-13), 13-2 in the contest as they soared to their eight win of the 2010 season.

Bryant sophomore Laura Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) and freshman Christina Eringis (Tewksbury, Mass.) each had one hit in the contest. Both of which extend their hitting streak to a team-high five games.

Junior captain Sami Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.) started on the mound before being relieved by Brittany Hart (North Andover, Mass.) and Kelly Cocco (Vernon, Conn.). Houseal picked up the loss in the outing and is still in search of her first win of the season.

BC got on the board early as they tallied five runs in the top of the first and one in the top of the second. Taylor Peyton, the Eagles’ pitcher, did not allow a Bulldog hit until Erinigis picked up a single in the bottom of the third. The freshman third baseman reached third on Bowen’s double but was caught in a rundown between third and home and tagged out before crossing the plate.

The Eagles tallied two more in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run homerun from first baseman Dani Weir to take an 8-0 lead.

With the eight-run rule in effect, Bryant was unable to pick up a run in the fourth or the fifth and had the game called after five innings of play.

Peyton picked up the win for the Eagles, pitching 5 innings, allowing only two hits and walking just one. She also struck out three.

The Eagles went on to defeat Maine in the second game of their doubleheader. The Eagles beat the Bears 5-2 in the neutral site matchup.

Bryant will host a doubleheader against Maine on Sunday, March 21. The first game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
