Softball drops pair

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team (2-7) dropped a pair of contests Monday at the 2011 Rebel Spring Games. The Bulldogs fell 5-4 to Indiana State extra innings before falling to Eastern Kentucky, 12-1, to wrap up day two in Kissimmee, Fla.

In the early game, senior Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.) took the mound for the Bulldogs and pitched 8.0 solid innings, allowing just 11 hits and three runs. Bryant took the lead in the top of the eighth inning as freshman Aubrey Mable (Aurora, Colo.) hit a base-clearing triple to give her team a 4-3 edge.

The Sycamores would answer with a rally of their own, as the Missouri Valley Conference opponent outscored Bryant 2-1 in the final two innings for the 5-4 victory.

Lauren McCart (Voorhees, N.J.) finished the day going 3-4 at the plate, while Lindsay Martin (Methuen, Mass.) went 2-4 with a run scored.

The Bulldogs dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 12-1, against Eastern Kentucky in five innings of play.

Sophomore Brittany Hart (North Andover, Mass.) took the hill for the Black and Gold as the Massachusetts native retired two batters on strikes and only walked one in 3.2 innings of work.

The Colonels had eight different players record at least one hit and surrendered only five hits to the Bulldogs while recording 11 of their own.

Martin paced the Bulldogs with her RBI in the bottom of the second inning, bringing home catcher Kendall Corder (Carmichael, Calif.) for the team's lone score of the outing.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against La Salle University (9:00 a.m.) and Temple University (1:00 p.m.).
