Softball splits final day at Rebel Games

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team split the final day at the 2011 Rebel Spring Games, as the Bulldogs knocked off Patriot League foe Lafayette, 2-1, after falling to Columbia, 5-2. With the split, the Bulldogs finished their week-long trip 2-6 and moved to 3-10 on the young season.

Sophomore Brittany Hart (North Andover, Mass.) pitched a gem for the Bulldogs in the late game, picking up her second win of the season after allowing just one run in the 2-1 decision.

After six scoreless innings Talia Zizza (Reading, Mass.) got things started with a solo home run in the top of seventh, tieing things up at one a piece. Kristen Carter (Branchville, N.J.) would reach base on a bunt and make her way over to third after a throwing error by the Leopards. With Carter in scoring position, Regina Burdo (Wayne, Pa.) would step up to the plate and play hero as the Pennsylvania native hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, bringing home Carter for the 2-1 lead.

The two tallies would all the Bulldogs needed as they held on for the 2-1 victory.

In the first half of the doubleheader, Bryant's offensive struggles continued as the Bulldogs were only able to muster two runs on five hits Despite another solid start from senior Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.), the Bulldogs committed five errors and left six runners on base.

After four scoreless innings, Columbia went up 1-0 in the top of the fifth but the Bulldogs answered with a run of their own in the bottom half. Alicia Mosesso (Abington, Mass.) would pinch run for Amy Weinberg (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) after she reached first on a single, and advanced over to second after Kate Murray (Fitchburg, Mass.) was walked. Burdo once again came up with a clutch hit, bringing home Mosesso with a single up the middle, tying the score 1-1 at the end of five.

The Lions would add four more runs, holding a 5-1 advantage heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning.

Bryant would pull within three after a RBI triple by Laura Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) but that is as close as the Bulldogs would get, as Columbia held on for the 5-2 victory.

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, March 19 for a doubleheader at Yale Starting at noon.
