Bryant trumps Harvard, 6-3

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – With one out and two runners on in the bottom of the sixth inning, freshman shortstop Aubrey Mable (Aurora, Colo.) stepped up to the plate and belted a three-run home run over the left field wall, lifting the Bryant University softball team to a 6-3 victory against Harvard University Thursday afternoon.

Despite getting outhit 10-5 by the Crimson (9-9), Bryant (6-11) left just nine runners on base compared to 11 for Harvard and committed one less error than the visiting side. At the plate, Mable posted a game-high three RBIs as five different Bulldogs recorded a hit in the outing.

Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.) took the circle for the second-straight day and put forth another solid showing in her 6.1 innings of work. Houseal (3-5) issued just two walks and struck out four batters while surrendering just two earned runs. Her counterpart, Rachel Brown, took her fourth loss of the season despite posting 11 strikeouts in 5.1 innings, as the Harvard pitcher moved to 7-4 on the season.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Brown walked home Laura Bowen (Hudson, Mass.), after filling the bases on balls.

Houseal would keep the Crimson off the score board until the top of the third, as Harvard tied things up, 1-1, on a fielding error.

Harvard would take the lead in the ensuing inning, but it was short-lived after the Bryant bats came alive in the bottom half of the fourth. Regina Burdo (Wayne, Pa.) started off with a double to left center field, setting up Lindsay Martin (Methuen, Mass.), who recorded her seventh RBI of the season with a single up the middle. Martin would eventually cross home plate thanks to a RBI double by Bowen.

Mable's three-run long ball in the bottom of the sixth would be all the Bulldogs needed, as sophomore Brittany Hart (North Andover, Mass.) stepped in the circle with one out in the seventh inning to close the door and wrap up the 6-3 win for the Bulldogs.

Bryant opens Northeast Conference play this weekend, as the Bulldogs host Saint Francis (PA) Saturday afternoon with the first pitch of the doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. Fans can watch all the action live at www.bryantbulldogs.tv or follow live stats at www.bryantbulldogs.com.
