Terriers bounce Bulldogs, 13-3

Lauren Guy: Postgame Reaction

Guy smashes pair of homers in 13-3 loss to Boston University

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore outfielder Lauren Guy (La Habra, Calif.) smashed her first two home runs of the season to lead the Bulldog bats, but the Bryant University softball team fell, 13-3, against Boston University on Wednesday afternoon at the Bryant Softball Complex.

The Bulldogs fall to 4-13 on the season after dropping their fourth straight contest while the Terriers improve to 15-8 by virtue of their fourth straight win.

Steady pitching from Erin Schuppert paced Boston Wednesday afternoon, as the junior worked around a couple jams early in to eventually limit the Bulldogs to three hits – two of them on Guy's home runs – while striking out four and walking five over seven innings of action.

The Terriers also received plenty of firepower from their potent bats, as BU amassed a season-high 19 hits to plate runs in all but two innings over the course of the afternoon. Six out of the nine Terrier starters recorded at least one hit, as three different players totaled three-hit games for the visitors.

Both of Guy's homers, meanwhile, were solo shots, as the California native notched her third and fourth career long balls while driving in two Bulldog runs. Senior Lindsay Martin (Methuen, Mass.) registered an RBI on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the second and also had the lone other hit for the home team aside from Guy's two bombs.

The Terriers tacked on three runs in the top of the first to jump out to a 3-0 lead before Guy answered on a shot to straightaway center on a 2-0 count to cut the deficit to 3-1. Boston responded in the top of the second with two more runs as sophomore Megan Volpano and redshirt junior Emily Roesch singled in back-to-back at-bats to give the Terriers a 5-1 edge.

Bryant had Schuppert in a precarious position in the home half of the second inning after loading the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch, as Martin's fielder's choice plated sophomore Kendall Corder (Carmichael, Calif.) to bring the Bulldogs to within three runs, 5-2. But Schuppert got out of the jam by inducing back-to-back pop ups to retire the side.

After a scoreless third, BU added to its lead with two more runs in the top of the fourth on RBI base hits from Volpano and catcher Amy Ekart to stretch the Terriers' advantage to 7-2. Guy brought the home side to within four runs (7-3) after homering in the bottom of the fifth on an 0-2 count, but that would be the last time a run would cross for the Bulldogs.

Boston continued to cushion Schuppert's lead with a pair of three-run innings in the sixth and seventh, as pinch hitter Mandy Fernandez belted a three-run long ball for the Terriers in the sixth while Chelsea O'Connor also ripped a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday afternoon when they face Ivy League for Yale for a pair of games at the Bryant Softball Complex. Start time for the first game is scheduled for 1 p.m
