Bulldogs look to get back in conference race with DH at Wagner

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Looking to even its conference record at .500 on the season, the Bryant University softball team will make the one-day voyage to Staten Island, N.Y., for a Saturday (April 7) afternoon Northeast Conference doubleheader against Wagner College. First pitch in the opening game is set for 12 p.m.

Fresh off a 3-2 victory against regional rival Boston University, the Bulldogs (8-17, 1-3 NEC) will look to begin their first winning streak of the 2012 season with a potential victory against the Seahawks (10-24, 3-5 NEC) tomorrow.

On Wednesday afternoon in Boston, senior Laura Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) provided the offensive spark with a two-run, game-tying home run against the Terriers, while sophomore Amy Weinberg (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) scored the game winner on an RBI groundout to give junior Brittany Hart (North Andover, Mass.) all the run support she would need in her strongest pitching outing to date.

Hart went the distance for the eighth time this season while striking out three, walking one and allowing seven hits to pick up her fourth win of the year.

The Seahawks entered the weekend with an even 3-3 mark in the conference but fell two games below .500 after suffering a sweep at the hands of Monmouth on Friday. Wagner dropped both games in West Long Branch, N.J., by 4-3 and 7-3 margins, respectively.

Junior infielder Brittany Huss leads all Seahawks with a .316 batting average on 31 hits and 11 RBI. Freshman Parker Kelsey has been the lead power hitter with a team-high three home runs and 22 RBI to compliment her 31 hits and .307 average at the dish, while sophomore Kristen Matteoni has smashed a side-high 34 hits and posted a .309 batting average.

A pair of freshmen has led the Seahawks in the circle, as rookies Olivia Zwick and Samantha Bedker have seen the bulk of the pitching action this season for Wagner. Zwick boasts slightly better numbers with a 3.21 ERA and 3-8 overall record in 11 starts and 70 innings of work, while Bedker (4-10) has posted a 5.62 ERA in a team-high 96 innings on the mound. Bedker, however, leads the pair in strikeouts with 54, compared to 39 for Zwick.
