SOFTBALL EARNS CONVINCING 8-1 WIN IN GAME 1, BUT FALLS 3-1 IN GAME 2 SUNDAY AT FDU

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team split an afternoon doubleheader with Fairleigh Dickinson, winning Game 1, 8-1, before dropping the nightcap, 3-1, Sunday in Teaneck, N.J.

Game 1

Led by a dominant performance on the hill from senior Jennifer Jacob (Deer Park, N.Y), the Bulldogs picked up a bounce-back victory, defeating the Knights, 8-1, in Game 1 Sunday afternoon.

Jacob allowed just one run on six hits and two strikeouts in seven innings of work earning her second victory of the season. The Black and Gold's scoring output was steady through the entirety of Game 1, scoring at least one run in all but two innings.

In the top of the second, senior Talia Zizza (Reading, Mass.) flied out to center, scoring junior Amy Weinberg (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) to grant Bryant the early 1-0 lead. Just an inning later, Weinberg singled to score freshman Elle Madsen (Wheat Ridge, Colo.), while junior Lauren Guy (La Habra, Calif.) homered to center in the top of the fourth inning to make 3-0 Bulldogs.

In the top of the fifth, Bryant exploded for three more runs, highlighted by a two-run homerun by Zizza. Junior shortstop Aubrey Mable (Aurora, Colo.) topped of her fantastic weekend with a two-run long ball in the top of the sixth, giving Jacob more than she needed for the 8-1 victory.

Guy, Mable, and freshman Liana Ogata (Tustin, Calif.) each collected a pair of hits, while Weinberg led Bryant with three hits and a pair of RBI.

Game 2

Despite out-hitting the Knights, 6-3, the Bulldogs could only manage to push one run across, dropping Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader, 3-1.

FDU's Mikayla Fernandez belted a solo shot to center field in the top of the first, granting the Knight's the early 1-0 lead. Neither team managed to muster a successful offensive attack for nearly the remainder of the contest until the hosts added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, making it 3-0 heading into the seventh.

In the top of the seventh inning, Guy singled through the right side to score classmate Kristen Carter (Branchville, N.J.), however the late push by the Bulldogs would not be enough as the Knights held on for the 3-1 victory.

Madsen threw another solid game for Bryant, allowing just three runs (two earned) on three hits in six innings as the freshman continues to produce on a consistent basis. The Colorado-native also helped her own cause collecting a pair of hits (2-for-3, one double), representing the only multi-hit Bulldogs in Game 2.

The Bulldogs will take a break from Northeast Conference action on Tuesday (4 p.m.) when they welcome Boston University for the first of their two games this season.
