Bulldogs head to New Haven for Yale Invitational over weekend

 

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After a huge weekend at the USF Spring Break Tournament in Clearwater, Fla., the Bryant University softball team wraps up tournament action at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, Conn, on Saturday and Sunday.

The Bulldogs, who enter the weekend with a 7-10 overall record, have won four of their last five games thanks to some strong performances in the pitching circle from sophomores Elle Madsen (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) and Katelin Saunders (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) over the weekend. The sophomore tandem allowed just 13 runs in 34 innings pitched (1.85 ERA) to go along with 13 strikeouts en route to a 4-1 mark in Florida.

On the year, Madsen leads the team at the dish with a .326 average with four homeruns and 11 RBI, while senior catcher Kendall Corder (Carmichael, Calif.) ranks second with a .317 average to go along with five RBI and a pair of runs scored.

The Black and Gold will play a pair against both Yale and Boston University over the weekend as part of the Yale Invitational, opening with a game against Yale on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Connecticut Bulldogs enter the three-team tourney with a 3-9 overall record coming off a .500 weekend at the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament in Florida. Junior catcher Sarah Onorato leads her team with a .282 batting average while senior outfielder Tori Balta is seconds with a .270 average. Senior Chelsey Dunham handles the majority of the pitching duties, posting a 1-1 overall record and a 2.78 ERA in over 27 innings. Last season, Bryant swept a doubleheader at Yale behind a pair of five-hit days from Lauren Guy (La Habra, Calif.) and Aubrey Mable (Aurora, Colo.).

BU opens weekend action with an 11-10 overall mark after a 3-2 showing at the Michele Smith Tournament othis past weekend. Senior Jayme Mask leads the way with a .435 average on a team-leading 30 hits while classmate Brittany Clendenny paces the squad with 20 RBI and a .314 average. The Terriers used a three-headed balanced attack inside the pitching circle with sophomore Lauren Hynes handling the majority of the duties, posting a 4.72 ERA in over 56 innings of work. Last season, the Bulldogs split a pair of contests vs. BU, stealing a 4-3 win in Boston thanks to a three-hit, two-RBI day from Mable.
