Softball hosts Sacred Heart Sat, visits CCSU Sun.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team returns to Northeast Conference play over the weekend when they host Sacred Heart on Saturday (1/3 p.m.) before heading to New Britain, Conn., for a showdown with Central Connecticut on Sunday (12/2 p.m.).

Midway through league play, the defending NEC Champs currently sit in seventh place in the conference standings with a 3-5 record coming off a tough 1-3 weekend vs. FDU and Robert Morris. However, the Bulldogs will look to build some momentum after a 5-3 victory over URI on Thursday with two more league opponents on deck over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Black and Gold will welcome Sacred Heart to Smithfield for a 1/3 p.m. doubleheader at Conaty Park. The Pioneers enter weekend action with an 11-22 overall mark, 4-6 against NEC opposition most recently splitting a DH with Siena on Thursday. Senior infielder Justine Sibthorp leads her team with a .261 average to go along with three doubles, a triple and a team-high three homeruns. Senior infielder Kate Nadler and freshman outfielder Lauren Delgadillo round out the .250+ hitters for the Pioneers, while freshman Hannah Ford enters Saturday with a team-high 13 RBI. Sophomore Jamie Carlson, senior Kacie Wentworth and junior Adrianna Mallory have combined for nearly 220 inning sin the circle and a 3.52 ERA. Bryant enters the weekend riding a six-game winning streak over Sacred Heart including a DH sweep last season in Fairfield, Conn.

On Sunday, Bryant will head down the road for a big matchup vs. NEC leader Central Connecticut at 12 and 2 p.m. Led by reigning NEC Pitcher of the Year Laura Messia, the Blue Devils enter Sunday's double dip with a 22-7 overall record and a perfect 8-0 against the NEC. Messina, who has thrown 151.1 of 197 possible innings for CCSU thus far, comes into Sunday's DH with an 18-3 record, an astounding 0.93 ERA, and 192 strikeouts (1.27 Ks per inning). At the dish, senior outfielder Kat Malcolm paces her team with a .362 average and a team-best seven doubles, five homers and 23 RBI. Last season, Bryant and CCSU split during the regular season before the Bulldogs edged the Blue Devils in nine innings, 3-2, in the NEC Tournament.
