Boilermakers hold Bulldogs scoreless Friday night at Citrus Classic 2

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After a two-run first inning, Purdue managed the rest of the game, handing the Bryant University softball team a 6-0 loss on Friday night at the Citrus Classic 2 in Orlando, Fla.

The Boilermarkers (3-13) got the early lead over the Bulldogs (1-6) in the top of the first, after Tayler Wullenweber plated Mallory Baker and Kristen Hoppman off the two-run single.

Purdue tacked on two more in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead. With no out and runners on first and second, Kaylah Hampton doubled to left center to score Baker from second. The next batter Brooke Perry grounded out to second, allowing Wullenweber to score from third.

The Boilermakers tacked on two more runs in the last two innings, solidifying the 6-0 victory. Maya Hughes knocked an RBI single to the pitcher in the top of the sixth to bring in Lexi Valone, while Sam Peltz hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Wullenweber from third.

The Bulldogs totaled three hits from sophomore Kaleigh Goulart (Marion, Mass.), freshman Marianna Politis (Arcadia, Calif.) and junior Gianna Pizzano (Saugus, Mass.). Wullenweber went a game-best 3-for-4, as the Boilermakers accumulated eight hits.

Red-shirt sophomore Logan Paul (Shaker Heights, Ohio) recorded the loss, allowing four runs off five hits, while fanning two batters in three innings in the circle. Sophomore Colby Norris (Toano, Va.) allowed two runs off three hits, while striking out one batter in four innings. Kaitlyn Moody received the win on the mound, throwing nine strikeouts, while allowing no runs off three hits.

The Bulldogs continue tournament action tomorrow, facing off against South Alabama at 12:30 p.m. and Mercer at 2:45 p.m.
