Bryant closes out regular season at LIU Brooklyn

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team is set to meet with LIU Brooklyn on Saturday, May 4 to close out its regular season.

SERIES HISTORY

  • The Blackbirds hold an 11-9 advantage after the two teams split in Smithfield last season. 
  • The last time Bryant played in Brooklyn, LIU swept the Black and Gold during the conference doubleheader, 7-3, and, 4-2. 

SCOUTING THE BLACKBIRDS

  • The Blackbirds lead the conference and are currently the only conference team to clinch a playoff berth with a 10-2 NEC record. LIU Brooklyn meets with Central Connecticut on Friday hosting the Bulldogs.
  • LIU Brooklyn relies on its pitching as they lead the conference in multiple categories including ERA (3.25), shutouts (8), and win-loss percentage (.644).
  • Elena Valenzuela tossed 136.2 innings so far this season and leads the bullpen with 71 strikeouts. She posts a 2.15 ERA, which leads the NEC, and helped the Blackbirds to six of their eight shutouts.
  • On the offensive end, Alina Castillo leads the team with a .353 batting average and 28 RBIs.

BULLDOGS NOTES AND NOTABLES

  • The Bulldogs recently split with Central Connecticut and now post an 8-6 record and are tied for third in the conference standings.
  • Junior Gabrielle Ermish (Pottstown, Pa.) tossed a career-high 10 strikeouts in game one against the Blue Devils. She now leads the conference with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.73 and is second in walks allowed per seven innings with an average of 1.50.
  • Freshman Toni Camarillo (Corona, Calif.) remains as the toughest player to strikeout in the NEC with just four strikeouts on the season. Against CCSU, Camarillo was four-for-six on the day with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Saturday marks Bryant's last regular season game, as its fate in the NEC playoffs will be determined at the conclusion of the doubleheader. NEC postseason play is set to being on Thursday, May 9.
