TRACK AND FIELD PERFORMS WELL AT NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – A total of three records, including two school and one personal, were broken this weekend at the New England Track and Field Championships as members of the Bryant University squad traveled to Northeastern University to partake in the event.

On Friday, freshman Meg Robertson (Sewell, N.J.) set a personal record in the 5000 meter with a time of 17:46.69, breaking her previous best mark by over 45 seconds.  Robertson’s record setting time was good enough for a 10th place finish in the event.

Also on Friday, junior Andrew Fitzgerald (New Hartford, Conn.) broke the Bryant record in the 400 meter hurdles in the preliminaries of the event with a time of 54.02. Fitzgerald finished fifth in his preliminary run and qualified for the finals where he placed fifth as well with a time of 54. 36. The previous 400 meter hurdle record, which Fitzgerald held, was 54.82.

Junior Thomas O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.) also had a fine showing at the championships, placing seventh in the 200 meter dash. O’Connor qualified for the finals with a time of 22.34, a season-best for the junior.

On Saturday, Dierdre Doyle (Carlow, Ireland) continued her strong season with another record-setting time in the 1500 meter. Coming off a victory at the NEC Championships in the event, Doyle broke a school record that had lasted for 13 years. The standout freshman finished with a time of 4:33.5 in the event, beating the previous Bryant best by just over a second.

In other action at the championships, the Bryant men’s 4x400 meter relay team finished 7th overall and missed the school record they had set last year by a slim margin of only .39. Also in other action, sophomore Chris Brida (Southampton, Mass.) finished 6th in the triple jump with a mark of 13.21 meters.

Multiple members of the Bryant track and field squad will participate at the IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 14th-16th in Princeton, New Jersey.
