BRYANT INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD RACES PAST COMPETITION IN SEASON OPENER

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant university indoor track and field team started the 2010-11 campaign with a statement, capturing multiple events at the Alden Invitational Saturday afternoon hosted by Brown University. The Black and Gold received solid performances from both the upperclassmen and newcomers, while several runners engineered personal best times.

"Overall I was very pleased with how everyone performed, and the hard work they have been putting in showed today," said head track and field coach Stephanie Reilly following Saturday's meet. "We are ready for the season to get underway over the next couple of months and after today's fine opener I am excited to see what they can do as the season progresses."

Senior Scott Twardowski recorded a second place
finish in the mile Saturday afternoon.

On the men's side junior Ryan Busby (Derry, N.H.) and Scott Twardowski (Rehoboth, Mass.) finished first and second in the mile, finishing the event with a time of 4:23 and 4:24 respectively. Dave Hurley (Ashway, R.I.) finished third in the 3000m with a personal-best time of 8:50, while the Bulldogs received a strong showing from Ben Coughlin (Worcester, Mass.) and Ben Polichronopolous (South Berwick, Maine) in the mile and 3000m events as well.

Junior Anthony Monteiro (Leominster, Mass.) captured first place in the 55m hurdles with a personal-best time of eight seconds. Joining Monteiro with a strong performance was senior Mike DiBella (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), who took third in the 600m.

The Bryant field lineup was led by junior Chris Brida (Southampton, Mass.) who claimed third in the triple jump event with a distance of 13.38m.

On the women's side Eimear Black (Glengormely, Ireland) narrowly missed the 1000m school record in her first race back after a long layoff with a time of 3:10. The field lineup was led by junior Joanna Chanaj (Peabody, Mass.) who took second in the high jump, and newcomer Erin Cromack (Greenfield, Mass.) took 5th in the triple jump.  Freshman Katelyn Kelleher (Wrentham, Mass.) made her first collegiate appearance, throwing the shot 9.20m.

The Black and Gold return to action Saturday Dec. 11 for the Harvard Invitational.
