SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University indoor track and field team was back in action Saturday afternoon, as the Bryant men took part in the University of Rhode Island Sorlein Invitational. The Black and Gold received several solid performances en route to the team's fourth-place finish in the squad's first competition of 2011.

Host Rhode Island took the top spot with 276.60 points, while UMass Amherst and UMass Dartmouth took the second and third spots respectively. Holy Cross and Brown rounded out the six team field behind Bryant's 64 total points.

"Overall I was pleased with the efforts put forward by the men. After just arriving back from the semester vacation they showed that they continued to put the work in over the break, and trained hard," said head indoor track & field coach Steph Reilly. "The first meet back is always a good rust buster and they all needed the hard effort."

Some notable performances from Saturday's event was Anthony Monteiro's (Leominster, Mass.) new personal record in the 55m hurdles race with a time of 7.94. Joining Monteiro as a top-finisher was Michael Arons (West Hartford, Conn.) who set a new personal record in the 55m dash with a time of 6.64 in the preliminary race.

The Bryant 4x800m relay team picked up 10 points for the men's side as David Hurley (Ashway, R.I.), Ken Rayner (Acton, Mass.), Ben Coughlin (Worcester, Mass.) and Scott Twardowski (Rehoboth, Mass.) crossed the line first with an 8:26.71 mark.

The Black and Gold are back in action at the Greater Boston Invitational Saturday Jan. 22 in Cambridge, Mass.
