Bryant sets program record at Alden Invite

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Led by a clean sweep in the men's mile run and a record-breaking performance from freshman Jasmine Bryant (Salem, Mass.), the Bryant University men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2011-12 season on Saturday at the Alden Invitational at Brown University.

Graduate student Scott Twardowski (Rehoboth, Mass.), junior David Hurley (Ashaway, R.I.) and Christopher Chapruet (Danvers, Mass.) finished 1-2-3 in the mile run and freshmen Blake Fenwick (Thomaston, Conn.) and Francis Foley (Acton, Mass.) finished 4-5 as the Bulldogs swept the event.

The Black and Gold also received several other strong performances in the opening meet. Nicholas Douglas (Shelton, Conn.) finished second in the 300m dash with a time of 36.41, Ryan Flanagan (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) finished eighth in the 600m run and Ryan Busby (Derry, N.H.) claimed second place in the 1000m run.

Three other runners earned second-place finishes for the Bulldogs as Anthony Monteiro (Leominster, Mass.) finished second in the 55m hurdles, the 4x400m relay team of Douglas, Kyle Reid (North Raynham, Mass.), Kevin Louine (Mattapan, Mass.) and Joe Pugliano (West Springfield, Mass.) finished second and Ademitokunbo Oremule (Mansfield, Conn.) jumped to a second-place finish in the high jump.

On the women's side, Bryant, dazzled in her collegiate debut, setting a program record in the 55m hurdles, finishing third with a time of 8.81. A native of Salem Mass., Bryant completed her day by winning the triple jump with a distance of 10.77m.

Amanda Dilley (Bridgewater, Mass.) won her heat and finished 14th overall with a time of 43.87 in the 300m dash, Brooke Tomasetti (Waterford, Conn.) finished fifth in the mile run and Danielle Davis (Brentwood, N.H.) jumped 1.48m in the high jump, finishing fourth.

The Bulldogs will complete their first semester next Saturday, Dec. 10, when they travel to Cambridge, Mass., to compete in the Harvard University Invitational.
