Black breaks 5000 record at Brown

BLACK'S PROGRAM RECORD HIGHLIGHTS STRONG SATURDAY

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Eimear Black's (Glengormley, Ireland) victory and school record in the 5000 highlighted a strong afternoon for the Bryant University track and field team at the Brown Spring Invitational on Saturday (April 13).

Already the school record holder of the indoor 5000 record, Black shattered Nicole Radzik's previous record of 17:35.26. She won the event with a time of 16:59.55, becoming the first Bulldog runner to eclipse the 17-minute mark in the event. Classmate Martha Reynolds (London, England) was also within the program record and finished fourth with a time of 17:21.47. Bryant's 4x100 relay team also set a school record with a time of 50.49, breaking the old record of 50.58 that was set in 2006. Amanda Dilley (Bridgewater, Mass.), Kristen Hayes (Menands, N.Y.), Jasmine Bryant (Salem, Mass.) and Nicole Dempsey (Norwell, Mass.) combined to set the record.

On the men's side, freshman Toren O'Leary (Luxembourg) had another strong performance in the 100, finishing fourth with a time of 11.23. The Bulldogs also received stellar finishes from junior Kyle Reid (North Raynham, Mass.), sophomore Kevin Louine (Mattapan, Mass.) and sophomore Nicholas Douglas (Shelton, Conn.) in the 400. Reid was fourth with a time of 49.74, Louine was sixth (49.76) and Douglas was 11th (50.30). Bryant's 4x100 relay team finished third with a time of 42.55. Pole vaulter Tyler Egner (Niantic, Conn.) also set a program record with a vault of 4.20m. The height of 13'9" was three inches better than Rob Schneider's previous record set in 2006.

The Bulldogs will compete in the Holy Cross Invitational next weekend in Worcester, Mass.
