T&F opens 2013-14 season at BU Invite

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – With a solid group of returning talent and a strong group of incoming freshman the Bryant University track and field teams are poised for a big season in 2013-14. The Bulldogs open the year on Saturday, Dec. 7 when they compete in BU Invitational in Boston.

For the sixth season, the Black and Gold will be led by Steph Reilly. The 2012 Northeast Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year, Reilly's sixth squad will be built around outstanding distance performers and a mixture of experience and youth.

On the men's side, junior Kevin Louine (Mattapan, Mass.), senior Kyle Reid (North Raynham, Mass.) and sophomore Peter Thorp (Ormond Beach, Fla.) will be the leaders in the sprints. Louine finished 16th in the 200 at last year's NEC indoor championships, Reid brings his speed to the 4x400 relay team and Thorp earned a 17th-place finish in the 60m hurdles at last year's indoor championships. Another pair of sophomores, Toren O'Leary (Luxembourg) and Adam Malone (Speonk, N.Y.), are also coming off strong rookie campaigns. O'Leary finished 13th in the 60 at the NEC outdoor championships and Malone was Bryant's top triple and long jumper, finishing sixth in the triple jump at the outdoor championships. The Bulldogs' final standout returner is junior pole vaulter John Somers (Wallingford, Conn.). He tied the school record and finished third at the outdoor NEC championships.

The women will again be led by a strong core of distance runners that helped the cross country team to a second-place finish this past fall at the NEC championships. Headlining that group is senior Eimear Black (Glengormley, Ireland). The two-time reigning cross country champion, Black holds program records in the indoor 3000 and 5000 and the outdoor 3000, 5000 and 10000. Joining Black will be classmate Martha Reynolds (London, England), sophomore Annmarie Tuxbury (New Hartford, Conn.) and juniors Brooke Tomasetti (Waterford, Conn.) and Kara Walsh (Waltham, Mass.). Tomasetti is coming off a 10th-place finish in the 800 at the outdoor NEC championships and Walsh holds school records in the indoor 800 and 1000. The Bulldogs will also look to a pair of young sprinters in sophomores Nicole Dempsey (Norwell, Mass.) and Kristen Hayes (Menands, N.Y.). Dempsey set a school record in the long jump during the indoor season and, along with Hayes, helped the Bulldogs break the 4x100 school record during the outdoor season.

Bryant will open the season at the BU Invitational and will not compete again until the second semester when they compete in the Yale Invitational on Jan. 11. The NEC championships will be held on Feb. 8-9 at the P.G. County Sports Complex in Landover, Md.
