Lodge qualifies for ECACs, Bulldogs win four events at Minuteman Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. – Bryant University track & field senior Melissa Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass.) won the 1,500-meter run and qualified for the ECAC Championships as the Bulldogs competed in the Minuteman Invitational held at the campus of the University of Massachusetts on Saturday in Amherst.

COACH SWITZER'S COMMENTS:

"Between the wind and cold, I think overall the team did well today.  They showed up and competed to what I feel is the best they could have done for today. We had some good wins in events over some great New England teams. Melissa and Adam really stood out today and led the team.  We're starting to have some great constancy as a team, which should bode well for future weeks."  

TOP PERFORMERS (MEN)

  • Junior Adam Winiarz (Norton, Mass.) took home a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.30 seconds. The time marked him fourth in the Bryant record book. In the 100-meter, Winiarz finished in second place with a time of 11.12 seconds, sixth all-time.
  • Senior Deion Raper (Brockton, Mass.) had the top time in the men's 110-meter hurdles on Saturday, finishing the event in 16.93 seconds.
  • Freshman Ryan Dumont (Salem, Mass.) had an event-winning distance of 1.71 meters in the high jump.
  • Junior Alec Binette (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished third in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 11.16 seconds – just four-hundredths of a second behind Winiarz. Binette's time locks him in at seventh in program history.
  • Freshman Jacob Borgia (Westborough, Mass.) finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.10 meters, the sixth-best time in program history.
  • Classmate Brett Cloutier (North Attleboro, Mass.) also entered the program record book. In the shot put, Cloutier threw a distance of 12.63 meters, the seventh-best distance ever by a Bulldog.

TOP PERFORMERS (WOMEN)

  • Lodge finished the 1,500-meter dash with a time of 4:33.23, qualifying her for the ECAC Championships in May. The time is second to only her own program record of 4:30.42 seconds.
  • Freshman Courtney Kelleher (Wrentham, Mass.) had a fantastic day in the throws. Kelleher threw for a distance of 11.83 meters in the shot put, third all-time in Bryant history. In the discus, Kelleher threw a distance of 33.14 meters, good for fourth all-time in program history. Both she and her sister, Katelyn Kelleher, are in the top-5 in the event.
  • Sophomore Emily Cluck (Johnson City, N.Y.) finished second overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.35 seconds. She finished just five-hundredths of a second behind the top-place finisher, UMass' Lindsay Witt.
  • Sophomore Jacklyn Sullivan (Plymouth, Mass.) raced to a third-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.34. Sullivan also finished third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:40.8, seventh-best all-time at Bryant.
  • Classmate Olivia Weiss (Newtown, N.J.) finished fifth in the 1,500-meter dash with a time of 4:43.29.
  • Just a week after entering the top-10 in the 400-meter, junior Emily Perryman (Lebanon, N.H.) improved on her time. Finishing in 59.78 seconds, the first-year track member shaved off nearly a quarter of a second off of the time she set at the Black & Gold Invitational.
  • Senior Shirley Carrington (Dorchester, Mass.) had a record-setting day in the jumps. In the long jump, Carrington cleared a distance of 4.99 meters, just .02 meters shy of last week's mark of 5.01 meters.
  • Freshman Camryn Wesoloskie (Manchester, Conn.) had a distance of 10.17 meters in the triple jump, the seventh-furthest distance by a Bulldog in program history.

MEET NOTES

  • This was the first time Bryant had competed in the Minuteman Invitational at UMass.
  • Lodge has won each of the two outdoor events she has participated in this season. The senior won the 5,000-meter run last week at the Black & Gold Invitational.

UP NEXT

The Bulldogs will compete again Rhode Island next Saturday as the team heads to Providence for the Ocean State Invitational hosted by Providence College.
