Women go for sweep of St. Francis (NY)

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Bryant University women's basketball team rounds out the 2010-11 season with a road trip to Brooklyn, N.Y. this weekend, starting on Saturday, Feb. 26 when the Bulldogs visit St. Francis (NY) for a 2:00 p.m. matchup. Bryant downed the Terriers, 59-48, earlier this winter at the Chace Athletic Center but is coming off six straight losses for an 8-19 overall record and a 5-11 mark in Northeast Conference play.

THE SERIES
Saturday's game will be the sixth meeting all-time between the two programs as the Bulldogs are undefeated against the Terriers, holding a 5-0 lead in the series including a 59-48 win earlier this winter on Jan. 8 at the Chace Athletic Center. The Bulldogs were paced by a pair of sophomores in the victory as Danielle Douglas netted a game-high 18 points while Katie Whittington chipped in with 15.

PREVIOUSLY, IN THE NEC
Despite three players in double-figures, the Bryant University women's basketball team could not salvage a season split against Quinnipiac as the Bulldogs fell in the Northeast Conference matchup, 81-67, on senior day Monday night at the Chace Athletic Center.   

Bryant (8-19, 5-11 NEC) was led offensively by sophomore Meredith Soper with 16 points including a trio of 3-pointers while freshman Courtney Schissler added a career-high 14 and senior Siamone Bennett chipped in with 11 and seven rebounds. Freshman Naana Ankoma-Mensa contributed with seven points and 11 boards.

Quinnipiac (13-14, 10-6 NEC) had five players reach double-figures as Felicia Barron scored a game-high 21 points while Kari Goodchild and Courtney Kaminski netted 16 apiece.  

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
St. Francis (NY) is 2-25 on the season and 0-16 in NEC play after falling to Wagner, 76-69 last Monday. Autumn Lau netted 22 points for the Terriers while Ashley Wilcots and Amber Lau added 14 and 13, respectively. As a team, the Terriers are averaging 48.5 points per game and allowing 65.7 ppg. Autumn Lau leads the squad in scoring with 12.2 points per game while Amber Lau is second with 8.0 ppg. Autumn Lau is also the team's top rebounder with 5.3 boards per contest. 

LAST TIME AGAINST  ST. FRANCIS (NY)
Sophomore Danielle Douglas scored 18 points and sophomore Katie Whittington added 15 points as the Bryant University women's basketball team knocked off St. Francis (NY), 59-48, in Northeast Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 8 at the Chace Athletic Center.

The Bulldogs (4-10, 1-2 NEC) benefited from a strong opening 20 minutes as the team used a 19-point halftime lead to help pick up their first conference win of the season. St. Francis (NY) fell to 2-11 overall and 0-3 in conference play with the loss.       

Douglas shot 6-for-12 from the floor and 6-for-8 at the free throw line for 18 points, one tally short of matching her career-high. Whittington was 3-for-5 from 3-point range while senior Siamone Bennett chipped in with 10 point and five rebounds. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 46 percent from the field while the Terriers shot at a 33 percent clip.

ON THE OFFENSIVE…GLASS
The Black and Gold have been masters of the boards this season, leading the conference in rebounding with 41.4 boards per game while the team also tops the league with 16.19 offensive rebounds per contest. Individually, Siamone Bennett and Brittany Stahura rank first and seventh in offensive rebounds with 3.56 and 2.93, respectively.
