Tobey returns to Smithfield

FORMER WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STANDOUT STEPHANIE TOBEY JOINS BRYANT UNIVERSITY COACHING STAFF

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Bryant University head women's basketball coach Mary Burke is pleased to announce the addition of former Bulldog Stephanie Tobey ('02) to her coaching staff for the 2013-14 campaign.

A West Yarmouth, Mass., native, Tobey returns to Bryant after a pair of seasons as an Assistant Coach for the University of Rhode Island women's basketball program. While in Kingston, Tobey served as the primary Recruiting Coordinator for the Rams during the 2012-13 season.

Prior to her time at URI, Tobey spent time at Fordham University, Lynchburg College, Lasell College and Brown University.

During her career in Smithfield, Tobey appeared in 105 games for the Bulldogs from 1997-2002, serving as team captain during the 2000-01 season. While at Bryant, Tobey totaled 916 career points, putting together her best season in 1999-00 when she averaged a career-best 9.4 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game in 24 starts. In addition to her accolades on the court, Tobey captained the first-ever Bryant women's lacrosse team in the spring of 2002, served as a member of SAAC, and was honored with the William T. O'Hara Award at the 2002 Bryant All-Sports Banquet.

"We are very excited to add another former Bryant player to our coaching staff," said Burke. "Stephanie has a great deal of coaching experience at the mid major level which is sure to benefit our team right away and in the near future."

"It is a true testament to the strength of our program that former players have the desire to return to Bryant and contribute to the team in another capacity. We are positive that Stephanie's wealth of knowledge and experience will help us compete for another Northeast Conference Tournament berth in 2013-14."

During the 2010-11 season, Tobey spent a year on the Fordham coaching staff as an assistant working primarily with the post players, while also serving as Recruiting Coordinator for the Rams. Prior to her time in New York, Tobey spent five seasons as head coach at Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Va., from 2005-10, where she helped the Hornets to a 16-win season in 2007-08. Tobey landed her first head coaching gig in 2003 where she spent a pair of seasons as head coach of the Lasell College women's basketball program.

Tobey earned her undergraduate degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and Communications from Bryant in 2002, before receiving a Masters of Education from Lynchburg College in May of 2009.
