Bulldogs defense leads to home win vs. SFU

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's basketball team defeated Saint Francis U. 58-36 at the Chace Athletic Center on Thursday night in a huge team defensive effort.

The Bulldog's defense held the Red Flash to 10 points in the second half, which led them to a 22 point victory.

  • The Black and Gold held SFU to 10 points in the second half.

 How it Happened

  • The Bulldogs got in front of the Red Flash in the first quarter ending the period with a 13-8 lead. The quarter was capped off by a Fortuny inbound play with 40 seconds left. Fortuny had four, Gallagher tallied three, Brooke Bjelko, Lucie Castagne, and Juliette Golden recorded two points.
  • The second quarter was a close affair, with SFU earning a slight 18-15 edge, resulting in a 28-26 halftime lead for Bryant. Fortuny beat the buzzer with a jumper from the top of the key to give the Bulldogs a two-point lead. Fortuny, Gallagher, and Jallow posted three, Bjelko, Shannon O'Connor, and Megan Bodziony recorded two.
  • In the third quarter, the Black and Gold clamped down on defense holding SFU to five points as Bryant tallied 15 (43-31). Alana Perkins highlighted the third period coming off the bench and hitting back-to-back triples from the wing. Jallow recorded five, Fortuny and Gallagher posted two.
  • In the final period, the Black and Gold contnued to dominate defensively, holding SFU to five points for a second time while scoring 15, giving the Bulldogs a 58-36 victory. The defense was the story as Bryant had four blocks and two steals in the fourth.

 Stats

  • Fortuny and Jallow tallied 13 points.
  • Castagne led the team in rebounds with seven.
  • Gallagher recorded eight points and shot 2-4 from three.
  • Jallow went 3-5 from three, and Alana Perkins shot 2-5 from beyond the arc.
  • Bryant tallied 35 boards.
  • The Bulldogs shot 45% from the floor and 46% from three.

  • The Black and Gold picked up their sixth conference win.
  • The Bulldogs now have five wins at the Chace.
