Bulldogs clinch playoffs, despite loss to UVM

BURLINGTON, VT. The Bryant University women's basketball team clinched their first America East playoff birth in program history, despite the 64-41 road loss to the Catamounts.

  • The Catamounts went on a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to make the game out of reach for the Black and Gold.

How it Happened

  • It was a defensive game for the first six minutes, with Marta Neira Martinez tallying four and Fortuny scoring two on a turnaround jumper (6-6).
  • The Catamounts outscored Bryant 4-1 for the remainder of the first quarter (10-7).
  • The defense continued to be the name of the game, with UVM scoring six to the Bulldogs' four at the 4:53 minute mark of the second quarter (16-11). Fortuny recorded two, and Martinez had a nice coast-to-coast layup before the media timeout.
  • The game remained close as UVM earned a slight 10-7 edge, resulting in a 26-18 score at the half. Nicole Gallagher scored her first bucket of the game, Megan Bodziony hit a free throw, Fortuny tallied two, and Martinez scored with 22 seconds left on a backdoor cut.
  • UVM outdueled Bryant 9-8 heading into the third-quarter media timeout. Gallagher took control and posted six, and Fortuny got a tough layup through contact to fall (35-26).
  • It was a close battle to close out the third, as UVM recorded seven to the Bulldogs' six (42-32), making the deficit ten heading into the fourth. Bodziony, Gallagher, and Fortuny all posted two.
  • UVM jumped out to a 4-0 run to begin the fourth, forcing a Black and Gold timeout (46-32).
  • The Bulldogs outscored UVM 9-8 before the fourth-quarter media timeout (54-41). Fortuny tallied five, Lucie Castagne made a driving layup, and Gallagher beat the shot clock on an excellent feed from Castagne.
  • The Catamounts closed the game on a 10-0 run resulting in a 64-41 defeat.

  • Bryant shot 31.4% from the field, 9.1% from deep, and 72.7% from the free-throw line.
  • Fortuny tallied 16 points and three boards.
  • Gallagher recorded 12 points and five rebounds.
