Bulldogs edge out CCSU at home on Friday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's basketball team defeated Central Connecticut 72-69 at home on Friday.

Mia Mancini scored two points, and Mariona Planes Fortuny and Nia Scott had double-doubles.

Kemari Reynolds tallied 12 points and six boards.

Key Moment

  • With four seconds left, Alejandra Ferreirós went 1-2 from the FT line, giving the Bulldogs a three-point lead, and CCSU had no timeouts.

How it Happened

  • The Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the game's first six minutes. Martina Boba had five, Nia Scott tallied six, and Mancini recorded two.
  • Bryant closed out the first quarter on a 13-8 run. Mancini posted five, Fortuny had four, Kemari Reynolds tallied two, and Nia Scott registered two (26-13).
  • In the second quarter, both teams matched each other, with CCSU earning a slight 17-15 edge, resulting in an eleven-point Bulldog lead (41-30). Fortuny led the way with six, Silvia Gonzalez hit a three, and Nia Scott, Mancini, and Reynolds had two.
  • In the third quarter, the Blue Devils outscored the Bulldogs 11-4, cutting the Bryant lead to two at the third-quarter media timeout (45-43).
  • CCSU would then take a 50-46 lead with three minutes left, but a quick Mancini triple off of a Boba steal and a last-second layup from Reynolds gave the Black and Gold a 51-50 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Bulldogs exploded to begin the fourth quarter, earning a 57-52 lead in the first three minutes of the period.
  • Then Fortuny fought through the contact and converted an and-one layup, sending the bench into a frenzy (60-52).
  • This was followed by a Reynolds and-one layup, giving the Bulldogs a 60-52 lead with six minutes remaining.
  • CCSU would then go on a 16-5 run, resulting in a three-point Bryant lead with 53 seconds remaining (68-65).
  • Both teams would exchange free throws back and forth, with Bryant going 1-2 on the subsequent three free throw attempts.
  • Then, with a 71-69 lead, a Bulldog missed the free throw, which a CCSU player rebounded, but the outlet pass was thrown out of bounds, placing Ferreirós on the line with four seconds left (71-69).
  • She hit one, and the CCSU last-second heave fell short, giving the Bulldogs the 72-69 victory.
